It is with a great excitement and joy that I am announcing my new position as the Editor of The Billerica Minuteman. It seems fitting to come full circle, starting my journalism career as a correspondent under the wing of my amazing mentor, Max Bowen, taking my skills out on my own as the Publisher-Owner of The Billerica Green Magazine, only to return, now at the helm of OUR weekly town newspaper. Max came on after a long tenure by Ms. Margaret Smith and made The Billerica Minuteman his own. In four years, he brought you “Local Voices” and “Head of the Class” as well as ensuring everything got covered. He took the time to mentor each writer in his charge and made us all better for it. Thank you, Max, for your patience, your service and your commitment to excellence. We miss you! As for my plans at The Minuteman, I will continue his legacy, bringing you much of the news and stories that you’ve grown accustomed to, and reporting with the same professional ethics of objectivity, truthfulness, impartiality, accuracy, fairness and public accountability you’d expect. I’m looking forward to bringing my own experiences from The Billerica Green, adding even more human interest pieces and reporting more broadly on issues that impact our town, beyond just our town center. I am currently back in school for my Master’s Degree in Journalism, Communications, and Public Relations so I plan to bring the knowledge I gain through my graduate studies into the newsroom as well. So what will become of The Billerica Green? I will remain the owner of the name and web domain and am actively working to collapse The Billerica Green facebook page and website as I don’t want any confusion between the two publications. I am committed to dedicating and devoting my energy and skill toward making The Billerica Minuteman the best it can be. Some of the content like back issues and videos on the Billerica Green website will be transferred to my remaining marketing and communications website, TBG Powermarketing. If you have any questions regarding either site, you can look me up there for additional information. I am also currently in the process of formally stepping down from the many boards and committees where I have been active around town as my membership is a conflict of interest. I want to be available to all groups in Billerica and will do so impartially. However, as your Editor of The Billerica Minuteman, I will still remain involved in community activities like clean-up days, event judging, or scavenger hunts as I have in the past, right alongside you. If you’ve been a part of Max’s team, I look forward to working together. Once on board officially, I will confirm deadlines and schedules and send out reminders to all organizations, columnists, boards, committees and departments. The success of The Billerica Minuteman, delivering your news in a timely fashion, depends on the efforts and cooperation of all of us. Thank you all for your support in the past. I’m so excited for this new and wonderful opportunity, and I’ll see YOU around town, Liana Measmer, Editor The Billerica Minuteman |
